Indian hockey team wins silver medal in the Olympics
BENGALURU: Indian hockey fans and players from Bhopal’s Jhajpur city were among the hundreds who took to the streets of the city’s biggest stadium to mark the opening ceremony of the 2016 Asian Games.
The crowds were greeted by a rendition of the anthem by the Bhopals Band as the Olympic torch was passed through the city.
“We are proud to be a part of this historic moment,” Bhopaling Band member and singer Prakash Srinivas said.
The crowd cheered as the flag-draped coffin of former India captain Jagdish Singh Jhoti-Bhagat was hoisted from the stadium, which was full of the Bhatti’s fans.
Jhoti Bhagat, a former captain of the Indian national team, died at the age of 83 last week at the Indira Gandhi International Hospital.
He was buried in a public ceremony in his hometown, Bhagalur, on July 4.
A large contingent of Indian players were also present in Bhopali.
India won silver in the women’s basketball tournament and the men’s volleyball tournament.
The Indian team won bronze in women’s tennis in the men�s tournament, which India won by an average of 5-1.
In the men`s basketball tournament, India won the gold medal by defeating China 2-0.
In women’s volleyball, India beat Russia 2-1 in the quarterfinals to take a 1-0 lead in the tournament.
